Swoosie Kurtz played a crooked juvenile judge on SVURead the decision here.
If some of you watch Law and Order: SVU you may recall an episode from last season which took on teen domestic violence and sexting. The episode starred Swoosie Kurtz as the judge who denied the deal the girl accused of child pornography for sexting was given and sentenced her to a camp for a year. Kurtz's character ignored the constitutional rights of children and sent them to a facility in which she got a kick back. Kurtz's character was arrested for what she was doing.
Well, that episode was loosely based on a juvenile judge in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. A judge, Mark A. Ciavarella, purposely ignored the rights of juveniles in his Court by denying them the right to counsel, never informing them the right to counsel, and forcing them into detention facilities where he had a financial stake.
It was a gross misjustice for these juveniles. For some, the time they served cannot be given back but all of those whose rights were violated will have there adjudications vacated and expunged. Late justice, but it does shows that the justice system can be flawed because of the acts of crooked individuals.
